BMW is recalling 27,720 cars due to a potential rollaway risk. The recall affects the 5-Series, 7-Series, and 8-Series model lines, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The issue is related to driveshaft connections that could experience premature wear, potentially leading to the vehicle rolling away. This problem stems from the joint that connects the rear differential, driveshaft, and transmission into one powertrain unit.
If the joint wears prematurely, the resulting damage can cause the vehicle to lose all of its motive power on the rear axle.
In rare cases, the vehicles could also be at risk of rolling off on their own, increasing the risk of an accident or injury.
The recall specifically impacts the following models: 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, 2022-2026 840i, 840i xDrive, and 2024-2026 750e xDrive models. Some 18,150 5-Series models are impacted, while the figures sit closer to 2,198 units for the 7-Series and 7,372 units for the 8-Series.
BMW will task its dealers with inspecting all of the impacted vehicles, and one of two repairs will be completed.
If possible, technicians will add additional adhesive to the joint in question to preserve the part as intended. If the fix is not viable, technicians will instead replace the driveshaft and rear differentials.

Since this is a recall-related item, there will be no charges associated with any repair work that needs to take place.
The automaker plans to send notification letters to impacted owners by October 2.
Owners can also check their car’s VIN against the NHTSA recall search tool to see if their vehicle will require a dealer visit.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides more information on the recall and the affected models.
It is worth noting that the recall process will involve a thorough inspection of the affected vehicles to determine the extent of the issue. This inspection will help technicians to identify whether the joint has experienced premature wear and whether it can be repaired with additional adhesive or if a replacement is necessary.
The fact that there are no reported injuries related to this issue is a positive sign, but it does not diminish the importance of addressing the problem. BMW’s proactive approach to recalling the affected vehicles demonstrates the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its customers.
In addition to the recall, BMW’s dealers will be equipped with the necessary tools and training to perform the repairs.
