Drivers are being warned to prepare for freezing temperatures, with a specific date identified as the most likely time for icy windscreens to return. According to a new analysis by Leasing.com, Sunday 22 November 2026 is the day when UK motorists can expect to start scraping ice off their windscreens.
The analysis is based on five decades of weather patterns, examining daily minimum temperature data for central London. The researchers found that the first freezing temperature occurred an average of 82.14 days after 1 September, giving a likely date of 22 November.
The earliest occurrence of a minimum temperature reaching 0°C or less in central London happened on 16 October 1993, while the latest occurred on 5 January 2003. Mike Fazal, CEO of Leasing.com, advises drivers to allow extra time to fully clear their windscreen before setting off, rather than simply scraping enough ice away to see through.
Drivers who don’t ensure full visibility risk a £1,000 penalty and three penalty points. Pouring hot water on frozen glass can also shatter it, turning a simple defrosting task into an expensive repair job.
Rule 229 of the Highway Code states that before setting off, drivers must be able to see properly, meaning snow and ice must be cleared from every window. Motorists also need to ensure that their lights are clean, and number plates are clearly legible. Mirrors should be clear and windows thoroughly demisted, too.
It is also important for drivers to avoid leaving a car running unattended while defrosting, as this can create a potentially easy target for car thieves and is also illegal according to rule 123 of the Highway Code.
As the weather starts to get colder, drivers should take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety on the road. This includes having a de-icer and an ice scraper at the ready, as well as making sure their vehicle is properly prepared for winter driving conditions. They should check their vehicle regularly to ensure it is in good working condition.
Leasing.com’s analysis provides a useful guide for drivers to prepare for the cold weather. The company’s CEO, Mike Fazal, emphasizes the importance of taking the time to clear windscreens properly and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety on the road. By following these tips, drivers can help prevent accidents and stay safe during the winter months.
