A truck driver in China recently moved a 172-foot-long wind turbine blade up a mountain road, an operation demanding exact positioning and specialized gear. The blade was carried by an 80-tonne truck climbing the 1,312-foot-high Baoding Mountain in the Nanling range. A video documented the effort, illustrating how oversized cargo must traverse narrow, twisting paths with steep drops and no safety barriers.
The blade was fastened to a custom trailer fitted with a hydraulic lifter system, enabling the driver to angle it up to 60 degrees to clear obstacles like overhanging branches, power lines, and sharp bends. Without this adjustment, the blade risked swinging perilously close to the mountain’s edge. The truck traveled alongside escort vehicles, which used radio communication to direct the driver through confined sections where even slight errors could trigger a disaster.

Harsh weather conditions further complicated the transport. Wind turbine blades are built to harness wind, but gusts on mountain roads can destabilize the load. During filming, strong winds forced the convoy to stop until conditions stabilized. A sudden gust could have sent the blade swinging violently, endangering the truck, the cargo, or causing a slide down the slope.
The video’s visual impact masks the deeper engineering involved. The hydraulic lift system is not merely an accessory but a vital component for roads where a minor mistake could turn a delivery into a high-risk operation. The driver’s concentration must remain unwavering, as the repercussions of failure are immediate and severe.
