A Figure 8 race at the Indianapolis Speedrome—a smaller venue separate from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway—descended into disorder and legal consequences after a chain of crashes and a violent altercation between drivers. The scene unfolded during the final stretch of the 50th Annual 3-Hour Figure 8 Championship, an event where late-model cars must maneuver through cross traffic, heightening collision risks.
The confrontation erupted when Jeffrey Shackelford (car No. 28) and Mark Tunny (car No. 3T) clashed in a lead battle with 10 minutes left in the race. Shortly after, Dana Tunny, driving car No. T8—already 200 laps behind—intentionally rammed Shackelford as he tried to rejoin the field. Shackelford’s vehicle stalled, and after Dana Tunny drove off, Shackelford exited his car to confront him. Footage shows Shackelford then climb into Dana’s cockpit, toss his helmet into the seat, and physically push the driver before security intervened.
The violence intensified when Dana Tunny later drifted through the pit lane, allegedly swerving toward Shackelford’s pit crew and spectators, according to reports. Though no one was struck, the action provoked an angry crowd, with multiple individuals punching and kicking at Dana’s car. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently charged Dana Tunny with two Level 6 felony counts of Criminal Recklessness: one for the collision with Shackelford while he stood on his car, and another for the reckless pit-lane maneuver.

Witnesses called the sequence one of the most chaotic incidents they had ever seen at a racetrack. The race format itself amplifies danger: drivers are forced into constant cross traffic, creating an environment where tensions frequently boil over.
