In 2024, Jaguar announced a halt in production across its entire lineup, signaling a major rebrand.

The Jaguar brand has undergone a major transformation, shifting its focus to the ultra-luxury market and targeting a younger, wealthier, and tech-savvy audience. This change has sparked intense debate among car enthusiasts, with the Jaguar Type 01 at the center of the controversy. The British marque now aims to rival Porsche and Bentley, a bold move that has divided opinions.

A Bold Rebrand and a Polarizing Design

In 2024, Jaguar announced a halt in production across its entire lineup, signaling a major rebrand. The company unveiled its ‘Copy Nothing’ campaign, which abandoned the brand’s traditional visual identity and sparked widespread backlash. The prototype of the Jaguar Type 00 further fueled the debate, with its boxy silhouette and futuristic styling marking a stark departure from Jaguar’s classic design language. Notably, the Type 00 ditched the iconic leaping jaguar emblem as a central feature, relegating it to a secondary role.

The production version of the Type 01, an ultra-luxury electric sedan, has been officially launched. With a starting price of around $300,000 in Australia, it’s the most powerful road-going Jaguar ever built. The car features a tri-motor powertrain producing 757kW (1030 metric horsepower) and a claimed WLTP driving range of 720km. Built on the new JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture), it represents a radical shift in the brand’s engineering and design philosophy.

A Radical Departure from Tradition

The Type 01’s design is a radical departure from Jaguar’s traditional aesthetics. Its long bonnet and low roofline are intended to recall the proportions of petrol-powered luxury cars, while its polarizing front fascia and wide, imposing rear design have divided opinions. The car’s interior is equally innovative, featuring a central spine separating the four individual seats and a 24-inch OLED display behind the steering wheel. The absence of a conventional rear windscreen, replaced by a digital camera feed, has raised concerns about practicality and safety, though Jaguar defends it as a futuristic innovation.

A writer who attended the global reveal of the Type 01 in New York noted that Jaguar executives were surprised by the backlash following their rebrand announcement. Rawdon Glover, managing director of Jaguar, acknowledged that the company’s previous business model was no longer viable, citing poor commercial performance and a shrinking, ageing customer base. Glover emphasized that the rebrand was necessary to ensure the brand’s survival and relevance in a rapidly changing market.

The Type 01 has generated strong interest, with around 50,000 people signed up to receive updates. Close to 80 per cent of them are new to the brand, indicating Jaguar’s success in attracting a fresh audience. However, opinions remain divided, with some praising its bold design and others criticizing its departure from tradition. As one observer noted, the car’s unique aesthetic may be a double-edged sword, attracting attention while potentially limiting its appeal to a broader audience. Orders for the Type 01 in Australia are set to open in 2027, leaving plenty of time for the debate to continue.

Reactions to the Type 01

A writer who posted a reel about the Type 01 on social media received over 1.9 million views and 1005 comments, with many people admitting they might have been wrong to initially criticize the car. The reel, posted on October 9th, continues to garner comments, reflecting the ongoing debate surrounding the car’s design and positioning.

The Type 01’s impact on the market remains to be seen, but its bold design and advanced features ensure it will be a recognizable presence on Australian roads. With a starting price of around $300,000, it targets a niche but affluent audience. Other models, such as the 2024 Jaguar E-PACE P250 R-Dynamic SE 2.0L SUV 4WD, available from $52,990 drive away, demonstrate Jaguar’s continued commitment to a broader market. As the brand handles this transformative phase, the Type 01 will undoubtedly remain a focal point of discussion among car enthusiasts and industry observers alike.
