
Land Rover has introduced a new stereo system available in its top-level Range Rover SV Ultra trim, utilizing electrostatic speakers for a 3-D surround sound experience. The system is 1000 times more responsive than traditional cone-style speakers, marking a major step forward for in-car audio. It is the first time the brand has used electrostatic technology in a vehicle, replacing the standard cone-based setups found in most cars.
How the Technology Works
Unlike normal speakers, which use magnets, cones, and voice coils to create vibrations, an electrostatic speaker uses static electricity and a very thin membrane installed between two metal frames. An audio signal is applied to the frame, which then vibrates the membrane to produce sound. This design is both lighter and much thinner than traditional units, allowing engineers to place them in different spots, such as inside the SUV’s headrests. The result is a cleaner, more precise audio profile.
The engineering behind the SV Electrostatic stereo is collaborative. It was developed with Warwick Acoustics, a company known for its work in high-end audio reproduction. Because the components are so thin and lightweight, they don’t just fit into tight spaces; they disappear into the vehicle’s architecture, allowing the sound to flow around the cabin rather than being directed from a specific point.
A Tactile Experience
The sound fills every square inch of the Range Rover’s cabin to a tangible degree. It does not sound like a system that is trying too hard to create surround sound, which often results in a distorted or unnatural experience. Instead, the system creates a truly immersive experience where the listener cannot pinpoint exactly where the speakers are located. You cannot locate the source of the audio, which helps the sound feel like it is coming from all directions at once.

To make the experience even more immersive, the SV Ultra also features haptic panels in the floors and seats. These panels transmit the bounce of bass to your body without relying on an overly enthusiastic subwoofer. The sensation is felt physically, giving the music a sense of presence that traditional speakers struggle to replicate.
There is a catch to this immersive experience. The floor and seat panels can be quite intense. During a demonstration, the system was shown to deliver deep bass that rattles the floor and moves the seats. This feature, called Body and Soul Seats, is meant to connect the driver and passengers to the music physically. For some, the sensation of the seat moving with every beat might be distracting, but the system can be deactivated if the physical feedback becomes overwhelming.
The Luxury of the 2027 Model
The 2027 Range Rover SV Ultra is more than just the new stereo system; it is the brand’s interpretation of luxury. The vehicle debuted a few months ago and features a special Titan Silver paint job that uses aluminum flake. In person, the paint takes on slightly different hues depending on the light, giving it a liquid metal appearance. The interior is cruelty-free and sustainable, featuring upholstery made from faux leather and trim sourced from rattan palm, a wood type that regrows quickly after harvesting.
Powering the vehicle is a twin-turbo V-8 engine under the hood. The SV Ultra is offered in both short- and long-wheelbase body styles. The vehicle starts at $255,350, which is a significant investment for a luxury SUV. The SV Electrostatic stereo is not included in this base price; it is an optional add-on that costs an additional $12,570. For audiophiles, the system offers a unique combination of physical sensation and high-fidelity clarity that is difficult to find elsewhere.
